Old Gallery Soundwalk 01

 

This is the first in a set of soundwalks that were recorded prior to the old NBMAA building being gutted and readied for renovation.

 

For me, perhaps the most interesting thing about these kinds of recordings is that they document sounds that are now extinct and sounds that can no longer be made: the creaking floor, the sound of the ventilation system, the elevator, the old staircase - even the overall sonic ambience of each gallery room is no longer in existence. This principle, offered here as a sonic memory of the old NBMAA building, is a microcosmic representation of many sounds that were once common in our global sonic environment and now no longer exist.
